The Peoples Notre Dame de Paris Competition
On April 15th 2019, a horrific fire severely damaged a national treasure in the heart of France. The Notre Dame de Paris was the culmination of the people, it not only represented the long history of the nation, but also the beauty that refused to be extinguished - even amid a violent revolution.

This tragedy does however bring forth an interesting opportunity due to the nature of the Cathedral’s architecture. The building is a palimpsest of influences that tell a story about the building’s existence and evolution.
As such, the design of the new roof and spire address the wonderful history and presents a way for the nation to heal. From the outside, bystanders see a familiar form. The roof line of the Notre Dame is a key element that has been maintained with slight adjustments that provide a new opportunity for space. Large windows follow the form of the building and allow light to flood into the space. At the centre rises a large spire. This modern interpretation calls back to Viollet Le Duc’s spire while providing functional space below.

Illumination Hall
As one enters the spire, they are basked in a prism of warm light. These colours illuminate the interior and convey the essence of the hearth - A warm, safe space for one to explore in peace. They also provide the impression of a Phoenix rising from the ashes as a representation of the strength and resilience of the people of France.

This multipurpose area will teach the public about the history of the cathedral while also offering rent-able space for events.
